Material choice affects the price, lead time and performance of a machined part more than almost any other decision. Here is a quick guide to the materials our customers use most.
Aluminum (6061, 7075)
Light, easy to machine and corrosion resistant, aluminum is the most popular choice for housings, brackets and fixtures. 6061 is the all-rounder; 7075 is much stronger and is used for aerospace and high-load parts. Both anodize well.
Stainless Steel (303, 304, 316)
303 machines fastest and is ideal for shafts and fittings. 304 offers better corrosion resistance, and 316 is the choice for marine, food and medical applications.
Carbon and Alloy Steel
Steels such as 1045 and 4140 are strong and low-cost, and can be heat treated for hardness. They need a protective finish such as zinc plating or black oxide.
Brass and Engineering Plastics
Brass machines beautifully and is used for fittings and connectors. POM, nylon and PEEK are great when you need low friction, electrical insulation or chemical resistance.
Quick Tips
- Choose the cheapest material that meets the functional requirement.
- Ask for a material certificate for critical parts.
- Consider the surface finish together with the material.
